What Quality Care Means in Anti-Aging Medicine with Dr. Philip W. Faler, ND
Video Transcription
Dave: Anti-aging medicine is often misunderstood. Dr. Faler, how do you define quality care differently from the industry standard?
Dr. Philip Faler: I think quality care boils down to the end result of quality of life, right? I’m not fighting death, that’s a losing battle. I’m fighting a loss of quality of life. So my end point goal for each patient is for them to really forget that they needed me and to go about their lives and their business feeling better and forgetting that they were ever in a state where they didn’t feel well.
Dave: What does success look like to you beyond maybe the cosmetic results?
Dr. Philip Faler: Success looks to me like a mom, a dad, a business owner, a CEO, a law enforcement officer, anyone who it might be, reaches their own personal health goals and is able to go and enjoy their work, their family, whatever it is, their activities, maybe they like fishing, with a higher quality of life than before they saw me.
Dave: So you pop in, help solve an issue, they go about their lives like nothing ever happened.
Dr. Philip Faler: And my favorite part about all of that is that ripples out. Let’s say I help a 40-year-old man who’s got two kids and a wife, and for the last year, he’s been at home by 4:30, he wants a nap and he’s irritable and he doesn’t want to play with the kids, and I help him feel better by, let’s say, hormone optimization, for instance, and I help him feel better, well, now he’s out in the backyard with the kids and he’s got dinner ready at 6:30 and he’s ready to sit and chat with his wife at 9:00 as opposed to where he was three months prior. And I love that because it ripples out and she feels better and the kids feel better.
Dave: That’s a great example of one touch can impact and domino in a positive way elsewhere. And they may not realize it at first until they sit back and go, “This is what I was looking for the whole time.”
Dr. Philip Faler: Yeah.
Dave: How do you balance innovative treatments with safety and responsibility?
Dr. Philip Faler: I try to stay a little bit behind the curve. I let new things like peptides and such, give them a year, see if they stick, see if they hold water. And then generally, if it’s anything not time-tested, I’m going to bring it into a small circle. I might try it on myself if it’s a peptide. I might try it with some close friends, treat a few people I know real well, or patients who’ve been with me a real long time. And then, of course, reading the research, looking at the research that’s out there and consulting with pharmacists. I spend a lot of time talking to pharmacists. They know their business very, very well.
Dave: Is there anything that your patients say that stands out most about their experience? You talked about the ripple effect of a father and the rest of his family. Does something else stand out?
Dr. Philip Faler: 22 years I’ve been at this, and the most recurrent compliment I get is that I make patients feel comfortable.
Dave: In their own skin?
Dr. Philip Faler: No comfortable going to the doctor. I’ll get a lot of, “My wife made me come in.” And 20 minutes later, he’s telling me his life story and we’re working things out and getting things sorted.
Dave: That’s probably part of your listening skills and making people feel comfortable.
Dr. Philip Faler: Yeah. And I take practical approaches to things. I’ve never wanted to be salesy in medicine, which can be uncomfortable. So taking a very practical approach in helping to make patients comfortable. I’m there to serve and to help, and I earn a living at the same time.
